The best thing you can do to help your child become a better reader is to encourage them to read everyday. They should be reading "just right books" - ones that they know most of the words and can easily retell. Encourage them to use strategies when they come to a word they don't know. A few strategies include going back and re-reading, looking at the pictures to see if it tells them the word & chunking the word (sounding it out in parts. For example chair would be ch/ai/r). If they still don't know the word tell them the word.
Some questions to ask your child after reading are:
-tell me what happened in the story
-what did this story make you think about?
-how are the characters alike and different?
-who were the characters and where did the story take place?
Make reading a fun family event & read with your child! You will be surprised how much they know and can tell you about the story!
