We had a great time at Field Day last week! All the kids did a great job participating and cheering on their classmates. We were thankful the sun decided to come out so we could have a fun field day!
We had a fun and busy week this week! The Perot Museum came to school and did a lesson for us on rocks. The kids got to go to different stations and sort rocks, see if they would float or sink and observe different rocks. The today we headed to the Arboretum for our field trip! We were able to enjoy a picnic lunch, had a great hands on lesson where we observed different types of seeds, leaves, roots, and plants + got to learn about the different parts of the plants and their functions. After our lesson we walked to the children's garden and got to see lots of different beautiful plants along the way. It was a fun day! What is better than being in 1st grade and having a snow day?? We had a great morning of reading stations with everyone really focused and working. I don't think anyone noticed it was even snowing! After working all morning we went out for a little walk in the snow before coming back to write about seeing the snow. Fun day! We are busy getting back into the swing of things here in 1st grade! Everyone is doing such a great job working hard and getting back into routine. We got to work on a special project with our book buddies last week. We are making snowman glyphs. These glyphs will tell information about us and our buddy. It was fun learning more about each other from this project! If you are looking for a fun game to play that will also help your child with their math facts grab a deck of cards & play "Go Fish" Here's how to play: We've paired up with a 6th grade class to have book buddies this year. The students introduced themselves by writing a letter to their book buddies and we're excited when their buddy wrote back! We met them today & spent some time reading with each other. The kids are already looking forward to seeing their buddy again soon! We had an elf arrive in our classroom last week! The elf is helping us to learn prepositional words such as by, between, near, above, below & more! We recorded where our elf was in our science journal and wrote sentences describing his location. It's fun seeing where our elf shows up each day :) We've had a fun week describing characters, practicing combinations of numbers, and learning about customs & traditions. We incorporated lots of Thanksgiving and turkey fun into our learning! I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We all have much to be thankful for :) We had a great field trip to Casa Mañana last week. To prepare for our field trip we read different versions of Snow White and talked about the story elements (characters, setting, problem & solution). The play, Snow White and the Prince, was a great experience for our kids. I heard several comments such as "I loved that play!" and "I wish I could watch it again!" They were able to make connections to the stories we read and identify the story elements of the play. We've been busy these last few weeks! We are studying shapes and learning different ways to make shapes along with the names of the shapes & describing them. We've been playing a buddy game to practice these skills called Fill the Hexagon. The kids love it and are really learning more about shapes this way. We have also been learning about communities. We've discussed what places are in our community and the people who are community helpers. We've also been learning about different jobs and the responsibilities of those jobs. We created our own class community last week - the kids did a great job with it! Today we got to go outside and learn about how farmers milk cows and even got to see one, Belle! We learned about all the different foods that use milk and how these foods help us to grow. It was a fun experience! |
